Every Muslim parent wants success for their child- in this world and the next and to keep them focused on the Straight Path. One of the surest ways to raise one’s child firmly on the deen, is to create a connection with the Quran – the book of Allah – which has been explicitly sent down as a guidance for mankind. For this connection to take place, one needs to create an affinity for this book to inspire feelings of attachment. Understanding the Quran, and exploring its depth will all come later, but as long as parents are able to create an association between the child and the Quran, the most important job of all is done.

Here are some do’s and don’ts to help parents create the Quran connection!

Start early

From the time your children are small (or even when your baby is in the womb), recite the Quran in a beautiful voice. Let the sound of your Qirat be one that creates an instant memory of the love that they have for him. What would be even better is to recite the Quran after Fajr, so that when your child opens his eyes in the morning, the very first sound he hears is that of the Words of Allah.

Narrate Quran stories

Let your nightly ritual be fun-filled, exciting narrations from the Quran. Don’t only narrate the story, but mention with it the name of the Surah it comes in to create a reference point for them, and hopefully to encourage them to look it up as they grow older.

Set the right values early on

“The best of you are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it.”(Bukhari, sound) Let this be a concept that the child is familiar with. Let him or her know that the Quran is a book of rewards, a feature that no other book can have.

Use the unconscious mind

Play the Quran in the car or around the house as much as you can. Recite the short Surahs around them so that they can learn them without any effort.

Keep the lessons short and happy

When starting a formal learning routine, keep the lesson time short and happy. 10 minutes of attentive lesson time is much better than hours of distracted, uninterested efforts. Do not hurry or be stressed when you sit down with the Quran.

Create happy associations

Let the Quran time be one full of cuddles, hugs and positive reinforcements. Follow up Quran time with something special, like going to the park, or a yummy snack.

Set goals and rewards

Let your child know that his efforts for the Book of Allah are not going to be wasted in this world or the next. Think up of creative rewards, so that the children do not become to materialistic with excessive gifts.

Set a competition of varied goals

If you like, you can create a healthy competition between your children. Do not compare your children though because each child is unique. What is best is to set different goals for each depending on their capabilities and see who reaches their goal first.

Memorize small portions with your children

As your child becomes better at reciting the Quran, encourage him to memorize portions of the text such as the short Surahs, and some importance ones like Surah Yaseen, Surah Al-Mulk and so on. Tell them the importance of these various Surahs as well so that the child adds to his bond with the Quran. Memorize with your child to encourage and guide as a model.

Explain the meanings

As your child progresses through the different Juz, try and explain some of the verses or give a summary of what the Surahs are talking about. Let your child know that the Quran is not only a book of recitation, but a book that is a guide on how to live our lives.

Become familiar with the esteemed Qaris

Introduce different Qaris to your children by name and let them hear and recognize their different styles of recitation. Not only that, talk about the lives of these Qaris to create a strong bond with people of the Quran.

Two smaller sessions are worth more than one long one

Aim to do two short Quran sessions a day. The best time is after Fajr, and possibly one right before Maghreb prayer. See what best fits into your schedule. Keep each session short.

Online learning

If you have a tutor teaching your child, either an online tutor or one coming to your home, make sure that you are following his progress on a regular basis. We have a great platform for finding the right tutor for your child, at a time that is convenient for both. As long as you have your laptop and an internet connection, you can be connected to the Quran even when you are on vacation!

Patience, patience, patience

Last but not least, be patient and do not get angry when your children make mistakes. Every child is different, and you must not create despondency in them by becoming exasperated. Make dua to Allah to help you children and to keep them on the path of learning throughout their lives. Ameen

With the advent of smart phones and tablets and the digital Mus-hafs, Muslims have been able to carry their Quran around with them wherever they go! We are able to recite our adhkar, recite portions of the Quran and read translations and explanation (Tafseer) of the Quran on the go! What a blessing from Allah in today’s busy modern lives!

Let’s take a look at when we need wudhu in relation to the Quran:

1- Touching a copy of the Quran (Mushaf):

It is well known that it is not permissible for a Muslim to touch the Qur’an when he does not have wudhoo, according to the majority of scholars and the four imams (may Allah be pleased with them), the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) wrote to the people of Yemen: “No one should touch the Qur’an except one who is taahir (pure).” Even when one is moving the Quran from one place to another, one must pick it up with a wrapper or cloth. A Mushaf may not be taken into the bathroom and must be kept respectfully so that it is not trampled or tossed around.

2- Touching the Mobile phones in which Qur’an is in written or recorded form

These do not come under the same ruling as the Mushaf. It is permissible to touch them without having purified oneself and it is permissible to take them into the washroom with one as long as the Quran app is not open on the phone at the time. This is because writing Qur’an on the mobile phone is not like writing it in a Mushaf. It takes the form of waves that appear and disappear, and its letters are not fixed, and the mobile phone may contain Qur’an along with other things. It is permissible to touch the mobile phone or tape on which Qur’an is recorded, and it is permissible to read from it, even if one is not in a state of purity (wudhoo)

Reading Qur’an on a mobile phone makes it easy for women who are menstruating and one who cannot easily carry a Mushaf with him, or one who is in a place where it is difficult for him to do wudhoo’, because it is not essential for the one who touches it to be in a state of purity.

3- Having wudhoo when reciting the Quran (from the Mushaf or the phone):

When reciting the Quran, it is permissible to recite it from memory when without wudhoo, or to read if the Qur’an is held by someone else, unless a person is in a state of Junub (or sexual impurity) until he has taken a bath for purification (ghusl). However, purifying oneself before reciting Qur’an, even from memory, is better, because it is the Word of Allah and it is more respectful towards Him to only recite it when in a state of purity.

I live with my family in a house which is not in the city center. It has always been a struggle to find a Qari (Quran teacher) to come over to help my son revise his Hifz lessons. To come this far, they would demand higher salaries and sometimes the time slots they gave us would clash with my son’s cricket class. Going to an institute was too time consuming to be an option.

It was at this time that someone suggested to us. I was not exactly sold on the idea of online learning. Honestly, I did not think it would be effective and I wasn’t sure if I could trust the website. Throwing caution to the wind, I went ahead and signed up! And I am so glad I did!

Not only did we find a Quran teacher who is a well known Qari in the city, but the overall experience has been incredible! After my son finished his class, I immediately have audio recordings of the class to review with my son later and the inbuilt classroom was a joy to use! We could take a class regardless of where we were and my son enjoyed using the computer and learning to navigate around the site!

1- No travel time

We could do our classes from the comfort of our home! My son would get exhausted from going and coming to such classes and now we have completely cut out the commute time! He has more time to play and is happier.

2-Well-qualified teachers

The Qari we have now is one of the most sought-after Qaris and there was no way that he would have come to our house! But Qutor allows us to invite him into our home every day for 1 hour! You can choose your teachers online by going through their CVs which are uploaded for you to look through. You can even do a free trial class to make sure that the teachers are suitable for your child.

3- Affordable fee

Saving money was one of the greatest advantages for me. We pay for the time we study and the fee structure does not change according to which area you live in!

4- Convenience

If we get late on our way back from cricket class, if I have to go to my mother’s house or if my son is invited on a play date, we can still do the Quran class regardless of where we are. We can just switch on our laptop and log in wherever we are. No missed classes for us anymore.

5- Self-Discipline

As an online student, my son has developed self-discipline, self-motivation and time management. Every one of these disciplines is of immeasurable value when you get into the working world. And I couldn’t be happier!

1- Get a teacher

The Qur’an cannot be learned without a teacher. Even the messenger of Allah learnt from angel Jibreel. similarly, the Allah’s Messenger taught the Quran and listened to it from his companions. A good teacher will not only correct one’s recitation but also teach the correct tajweed and the rules. Qutor.com has a great list of tutors who can teach you online.

2- Set reasonable and possible goals

Set a daily quota of verses that you intend to memorize. This may be different for everyone, according to their situations. But a deed that is done consistently is far more beloved than one that is done in excess but not continued. Make sure that your learning is perfect, otherwise reduce your goals so that whatever you learn is memorized by heart.

3- Learn with Understanding

An important thing that greatly aids the process of memorizing the Qur’an is to understand the meaning of the verses one is memorizing, and know how they are linked to each other. Read the explanation of the verses and bring their meanings to mind while you are reciting them to aid in a stronger memorization.

4- Revise throughout the day

A great way to constantly revise the lesson of the day is to recite in one’s salah five times a day. Other great times to recite and revise is in the car on the way to school/work, before sleeping, waiting at any other place such as the doctors , and so on.

5- Watch out for similar (analogous) portions of the Qur’an

Some parts of the Qur’an resemble each other in meaning, wording, or repetition of verses. Out of the 6000 verses of the Quran, approximately 2000 carry some sort of resemblance to others, either being completely same, or differences of one letter, a word or two, or more. Give special attention these so that you do not stumble at these places and makes mistakes.

6- Select one copy (Mushaf) of the Quran

A hafiz should have a specific  copy of the Quran from which he reads all the time. Visual image of the page leaves an imprint in the mind, making it easier to recall.

7- Recite it in a beautiful voice

Beautify the recitation as much as you can, and read it with melody. It is pleasing to one’s ears, providing incentive to continue with the memorization.  It helps make one’s memorization firm and strong because any mistake will ‘sound’ incorrect as it will distort the harmony of the rhythm one is used to.

8- Recite to others

It is very common for one to make mistakes in memorizing a Surah, without realizing it – even when one looks at the Mushaf. Have a companion or teacher who can listen to your recitation. This companion be a precise memorizer himself and there is a great list of tutors on Qutor.com who would be very valuable companions for this task.

9- Constantly review what has been previously learnt

Ibn `Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) quoted the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as saying, “The likeness of the one who memorizes the Qur’an is that of the owner of a hobbled camel. If he tends to it regularly, he will keep it, but if he lets it go, he will lose it.” (Al-Bukhari).
One must review whatever he has learnt of the Quran. This should be not less than 1/30th of the Quran , and should not exceed ten Juz of the Qur’an, because Allah’s Messenger (sa) said  “It would be difficult for anyone who recites the (full) Qur’an in less than three nights to comprehend it.”

10- Having pure intention

Last but not least, make the intention purely for the sake of Allah.

No matter whether it is a worldly objective or something that is in Islamic preaching, the achievement of it all depends upon focus. When a Muslim is focus, he or she sees thing clearly and when the destination is clear in the eyes, the ultimate result is a person arriving at the destination successfully. A simple example of it can be seen with respect to prayers, about which Quran says:
The Believers must (eventually) win through, those who humble themselves in their prayers.” (23:1-2)
From the ayah it is clear that those who humble themselves in prayer will eventually win. If this ayah is seen from the perspective of focus, then humbleness in prayer is something which one only achieves when one is focused. The more focused one is during prayer, the more he or she realizes what prayer is and the more he or she grows humble. Therefore, if a Muslim is to win, then he or she must undertake every task in life with complete clarity and focus. You canread this article discussing about improving concentration while offering prayers.
Punctuality:
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was asked:
“Which deed is the dearest to Allah?”
He replied:
“To offer the prayers at their early stated fixed times.” (Bukhari)
In addition to pointing the importance of prayers, this hadith also highlights the importance of offering Namaz on the given time, in other words it highlights punctuality. In order to be successful in worldly as well as religious life, a Muslim has to be punctual in every aspect of life and value time. Therefore, a Muslim must be conscious of the commitments with regards to time and adhere to them strictly.
Consistency:
Consistency is another key attribute that results in a person achieving success. When one is consistent, then he or she sticks with things and takes them to completion. This consistency gives birth to steadfastness which then finds its roots in trust in Allah Almighty. Therefore, in every undertaking a Muslim must be as consistent as possible. Hazrat Ayesha (RA) narrates:
“The most beloved action to Allah’s Apostle was that which is done continuously and regularly.” (Bukhari)
Conclusion:
In a nutshell, every Muslim must try making the aforementioned attributes as habits. Once a Muslim makes these attributes as habits, the ultimate result is he or she achieving success with balance in this life and in the life hereafter as well.

I convey to you the messages of my Lord, and I am to you a trustworthy adviser.” (7:68)
From the ayah it is clear that being trustworthy is one of the Sunnahs of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and every Muslim knows that following His Sunnah always leads to success in both the lives. Therefore, for a Muslim it is imperative to adopt and grow qualities that make him or her trustworthy in life.
Self-Restraint:
We as humans are bound to commit error, however, this fatal flaw in our nature does not mean that we don’t need to control ourselves, rather we need to practice self constraint as much as possible. It is this practicing of self-restraint that keeps us on the right track and prevents us from going stray on a path that leads to total darkness. Those who learn Quran and try to understand it, are aware of the fact that all the instructions in Quran are to help a Muslim in practicing self-constraint. In Quran, Allah says:
Stay PatientBut none is granted it except those who are patient, and none is granted it except one having a great portion [of good]. (41:35)
From this ayah it can be deduced that the practicing patience and self-restraint results in a person receiving goodness and great fortune as a reward. Therefore, the success in the form of goodness comes to all those who are patient and practice self-restraint. Therefore, a Muslim must also learn from Quran the things that need to be avoided and whenever the temptation rises, he or she must resist it by practicing self-restraint.
Thoroughness:
The reason why we as humans are not able to stick with the right path or do anything good in our life is that we do not pursue it with thoroughness. The term ‘thoroughness’ here means aiming for perfection. When one sets perfection as an ideal, then the least he or she could achieve would be better than setting something ordinary as an ideal. It was one of the Sunnah of Prophet (PBUH) that He was perfect in character. Therefore, every Muslim must try pursuing perfection, as the pursuit of it leads to a person becoming good in character and achieving small milestones in the way successfully.

Being true is one of the core habits that every civilized society appreciates in its members. When people adopt truthfulness, it actually means that they have laid the most important foundation stone upon which they are going to construct a building of great character.
In Islam truthfulness is one of the best virtues that a Muslim can have. It is the key component in one’s character that shows the righteousness of the person. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said about being truthfulness in the following way:
“Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. And a man keeps on telling the truth until he becomes a truthful person. Falsehood leads to al-fujur (wickedness, evil doing), and al-fujur leads to the (Hell) Fire, and a man may keep on telling lies till he is written before Allah, a liar.” (Bukhari)
This hadith speaks of the benefits and rewards of being truthful and the vices of being a liar. Those who consider paradise as their objective of success can get great information about achieving their goal from this hadith. In order to successfully achieve their goal, all they have to be is truthful while following Islamic way of life. When they are truthful, they set the course of events in such a way that ultimately leads to paradise. Therefore, a Muslim must incorporate the habit of being truthful in his or her life in order to grow closer to Allah successfully.
Trustworthiness:
Being trustworthy is also an integral component that is to be appreciated in the personality of a person. Not everyone in this world is trustworthy and people do not trust other with anything, this lack of trust on someone shows that one lacks the characteristic attributes of goodness because of which people do not show trust on anyone. When there is someone on whom people trust, it shows that people believe in his or her character and it is the goodness in the character of that person that has made them trust him or her with either their secret or possession.
