 MOSES FINDS AL-KHIDR

While he was asleep, his companion saw the fish wriggle out of the vessel into the river and swim away. However, he forgot to relate this incident to Moses. When he awoke, they continued their journey until they were exhausted and hungry. Moses asked for his morning meal. Only then did his companion recall that the fish they had brought with them had gotten away. Hearing this, Moses exclaimed: ‘This is exactly what we are seeking!” They hurriedly retraced their steps to the place where the rivers met and where the fish had jumped out. There they found a man, his face partly covered with a hood. His bearing showed he was a saintly man. He was Al-Khidr, the guide.

MOSES FINDS AL-KHIDR – QUR’ANIC VERSES

Allah the Almighty narrated: And (remember) when Moses said to his boy-servant: “I will not give up (travelling) until I reach the junction of the two seas or (until) I spend years and years in travelling.”

But when they reached the junction of the two seas, they forgot their fish, and it took its way through the sea as in a tunnel. So when they had passed further on (beyond that fixed place), Moses said to his boy-servant: “Bring us our morning meal; truly, we have suffered much fatigue in this, our journey.”

He said: “Do you remember when we betook ourselves to the ock? I indeed forgot the fish, none but Satan made me forget to remember it. It took its course into the sea in a strange (way)!”

(Moses) said: “That is what we have been seeking.” So they went back retracing their footsteps.

Then they found one of Our slaves, unto whom We had bestowed mercy from Us, and whom We had taught knowledge from Us. Surah 18: 60-65

 MOSES AND AL-KHIDR

One day, Moses delivered such an impressive sermon that all who heard it were deeply moved. Someone in the congregation asked: “O Messenger of Allah, is there another man on earth more learned than you?” Moses replied: “No!”, believing so, as Allah had given him the power of miracles and honored him with the Torah.

However, Allah revealed to Moses that no man could know all there is to know, nor would one messenger alone be the custodian of all knowledge. There would always be another who knew what others did not. Moses asked Allah: “O Allah, where is this man? I would like to meet him and learn from him.” He also asked for a sign to this person’s identity.

Allah instructed him to take a live fish in a water-filled vessel. Where the fish disappeared, he would find the man he sought. Moses set out on his journey, accompanied by a young man who carried the vessel with the fish. They reached a place where two rivers met and decided to rest there. Instantly, Moses fell asleep.

THE MOST NOBLE AND EXCELLENT PART OF THE QURAN

An-Nisai records on the authority of Anas that the prophet said,

“Should I not inform you of the most noble and excellent part of the Quran?” He then recited “All praise and thanks are due to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds”

Mujahid said, ‘When this chapter was revealed it bore down heavily upon iblis and he let out a loud wail in lament…’

THE MEANING OF SURAH FATIHAH

In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

All the praises and thanks be to Allah, the Lord of the Alameen (mankind, jinns and all that exists).

The Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.

The Only Owner (and the Only Ruling Judge) of the Day of Recompense (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)

You (Alone) we worship, and You (Alone) we ask for help (for each and everything).

Guide us to the Straight Way

The Way of those on whom You have bestowed Your Grace, not (the way) of those who earned Your Anger, nor of those who went astray. [Quran, Surah Al-Fatihah]

SOME HEALTH BENEFITS OF OLIVE OIL

• Cancer Prevention Evidence suggests that olive and olive oil consumption as part of a healthy Mediterranean diet has cancer-protective properties. Research also found that active ingredients in olive oil prevented human colon cancer cells from multiplying.

• High blood pressure A study published in 2007 in the Journal of Nutrition found that introducing moderate consumption of olive oil in the diet reduced systolic blood pressure.

 PROPHETIC MEDICINE – OLIVE OIL

Ibn al-Qayyim described the benefits of olive oil in his book Prophetic Medicine. He said that the characteristics of this oil corresponded to the type of olives from which it came from; oil pressed from ripe olives was the better than oil from unripe olives. He also said that the older the oil, the more effective it was, and when olive oil was more beneficial when it was pressed with water.

Ibn al-Qayyim also mentioned that all types of olive oil could soften the skin and delay whitening of the hair. He also said that the benefits of this oil were many times greater than have been mentioned.

SOME HADITH ON THE BENEFITS OF USING OLIVE OIL:

The Messenger peace and blessings be upon him said: “Eat olive oil and anoint yourselves with it, for it is from a blessed tree.” (Tirmidhi) “Eat olive oil with your bread, and oil yourselves with it, for it is from a blessed tree.” (Ibn Maja)

SOME FACTS ABOUT OLIVE OIL

Olives are the fruits that grow on the olive tree, which comes from the Oleaceae family. They contain a single pit and their flesh is filled with oil. The ripe fruits are pressed to extract the oil

Green and black olives are essentially the same olive and only vary in the degree of ripeness- black being the most ripe. It consists of 75% heart-healthy mono unsaturated fat and only 13% saturated fat. It contains active compounds such as oleocanthal, which has a strong anti-inflammatory action to fight heart-disease and cancer.

It also contains the natural antioxidants polyphenols, whose beneficial effects include lowering cholesterol, blood pressure and the risk of coronary heart disease. Many other nut and seed oils have no polyphenols whatsoever.

THE PURPOSE OF SENDING THE QURAN IN TWO LEVELS: THE “IN STAGES” AND THE “ALL AT ONCE” ORDER (WHICH WE HAVE TODAY):

The “All At Once” order is the main permanent form of the Divine Book and this has been destined to be the manual and handbook for the Muslim Nation, the believers of Islam and followers of Muhammad, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam. This is to be recited, studied and applied for the establishment of the rules and regulations for living up to the end of the world.

The “In Stages” order was for Muhammad, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, to invite and call people towards Islam. This is the order which should be used by Muslims when preaching Islam to non-believers.

 IN STAGES:

It is the transfer of the Word of Allah, the Quran, from heaven to the Prophet Muhammad, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, gradually, over a period of 23 years. It was revealed in pursuance of the circumstances and events dealt with by the Prophet in ten verses at one time, five some times, sometime more, as also many more as well. The verses revealed in Makkah are called Makkan and the ones revealed in Madeenah are termed Madeenan. The order of revelation is quite different to that of the “All at once” order.

The following are the quotations from the Quran related to the order of revelation that point out to the gradual revelation in piecemeal. Allah Says (what means):

“It is He Who continued sending down the Writ (the Quran) to you with truth, confirming what came before it. And He sent down the Tawraat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel).” [Quran 3:3]

“Say: Whoever is an enemy to (angel) Jibreel, (let him die in his fury, for indeed he has continuously brought it down to your heart by Allah’s permission, confirming what came before it and guidance and glad tidings for the believers.” [Quran 2:97]

“And We went on sending from the Quran that which is a healing and mercy to those who believe, and it increases the wrong-doers nothing but loss.” [Quran 17:82]

“Say: The Spirit (angel Jibreel) had been bringing it (the Quran) down from your Lord with truth, that it may make firm and strengthen (the faith of) those who believe and as a guidance and glad tidings to those who have submitted themselves to Allah.” [Quran 16:102]

“And (it is) a Writ (Quran) which He have divided (into parts), in order that you might recite it to men at intervals. And We have revealed it by stages.” [Quran 17:106]

“And if you (mankind) are in doubt concerning that which We have sent down (the Quran in stages) to one slave, then produce a chapter of the like thereof and call witnesses (supporters and helpers) besides Allah, if you are truthful.” [Quran 2:23]

“Verily We: It is We who have sent down (in stages) the Thikr (Quran) and surely, We will guard it (from corruption).” [Quran 15:9]

 ORDERS OF QURAN REVELATION:

There are two orders through which The Word of Allah (The Quran) was revealed:

ALL AT ONCE:

It is the order in which the whole Quran (in its present order) was transferred from the Al-Lawh Al-Mahfooth (The Preserved Tablet) to the Bayt Al-‘Izzah (The universal heaven) on the night of Al-Qadr (Decree). Allah Says (what means):

“Verily! We have sent it (this Quran) down in the night of Al-Qadr” [Quran 97:1]

“We have sent it (this Quran) down on a blessed night (i.e. the night of Al-Qadr) in the month of Ramadan. Verily, We are ever warning (mankind). Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainment.” [Quran 44:3-4]

“The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Quran, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong).” [Quran 2:185]

Imaam As –Siyooti, may Allah have mercy upon him, who was famous for his vast knowledge of the Quran and its sciences, stated regarding the wisdom behind the transfer of the whole Quran: “The importance and greatness of one whole manual for all human beings up to the end of life in this world should be fully realised. Also the importance of the Prophet and his followers; the bearer and the executors of this teaching is also to be realised by the creatures of this world.”

 IBLIS’S (SATAN-SHAITAN) VOW TO MISLEAD

Allah Almighty recounts Iblis’s disobedience in another surah: (Remember) when your Lord said to the angels: “Truly I am going to create man from clay. So when I have fashioned him and breathed into him (his) soul created by Me, then you fall down prostrate to him.” So the angels prostrated themselves, all of them: except Iblis, he was proud and was one of the disbelievers.

(Allah) said: “0 Iblis! What prevents you from prostrating yourself to one whom I have created with Both My Hands. Are you too proud (to fall prostrate to Adam) or are you one of the high exalted?” (Iblis) said, “I am better than he, You created me from fire, and You created him from clay.”

(Allah) said: “Then get you from here, for verily, you are outcast. And verily!, My Curse is on you till the Day of Recompense.” (Iblis) said: ‘My Lord! Give me then respite till the Day the (dead) are resurrected.” Allah said: “Verily! You are of those allowed respite – till the Day of the time appointed.” Iblis said: “By Your Might, then I will surely mislead them all, – except Your chosen slaves amongst them (faithful, obedient, true believers of Islamic Monotheism).”

 EATING FROM THE FORBIDDEN TREE

“And O Adam! Dwell you and your wife in Paradise, and eat thereof as you both wish, but approach not this tree otherwise you both will be of the Zalimeen (unjust and wrong-doers).”

Then Satan whispered suggestions to them both in order to uncover that which was hidden from them of their private parts (before); he said: “Your Lord did not forbid you this tree save you should become angels or become of the immortals.” And he (Satan) swore by Allah to them both (saying): “Verily, I am one of the sincere well-wishers for you both.”

So he misled them with deception. Then when they tasted of the tree, that which was hidden from them of their shame (private parts) became manifest to them and they began to stick together the leaves of Paradise over themselves (in order to cover their shame). And their Lord called out to them (saying): “Did I not forbid you that tree and tell you: Verily, Satan is an open enemy unto you?”

They said: “Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If You forgive us not, and bestow not upon us Your Mercy, we shall certainly be of the losers.” Allah said: “Get down, one of you an enemy to the other (i.e. Adam, Eve, and Satan, etc.). On earth will be a dwelling-place for you and an enjoyment, – for a time.” He said: “Therein you shall live, and therein you shall die, and from it you shall be brought out (i.e., resurrected). Surah 7: 19-25

ADAM (ALAIHI ASSALAM) – IBLIS (SATAN-SHAITAN), MAN’S ENEMY

IBLIS’S (SATAN-SHAITAN) ARROGANCE

Almighty Allah also revealed: And surely, We created you (your father Adam) and then gave you shape (the noble shape of a human being), then We told the angels, “Prostrate to Adam; and they prostrated, except Iblis, he refused to be of those who prostrate.”

(Allah) said: “What prevented you (O Iblis) that you did not prostrate, when I commanded you?”

(Iblis) said: “I am better than him (Adam), You created me from fire, and him You created from clay.”

(Allah) said: “0 Iblis, get down from this (Paradise), it is not for you to be arrogant here. Get out, for you are of those humiliated and disgraced.” Surah 7: 11-13

IBLIS’S (SATAN-SHAITAN) VOW FOR EVIL

(Iblis) said: “Allow me respite till the Day they are raised up (i.e. The Day of Resurrection).”

(Allah) said: “You are of those allowed respite.”

(Iblis) said: “Because You have sent me astray, surely I will sit in wait against them (human beings) on Your Straight Path. Then I will come to them from before them and behind them, from their right and from their left, and You will not find most of them as thankful ones (i.e. they will not be dutiful to You).”

(Allah) said (to Iblis): “Get out from this (Paradise) disgraced and expelled. Whoever of them (mankind) will follow you, then surely I will fill Hell with you all.” Surah 7: 14-18

“History makes it clear, however, that the legend of fanatical Muslims sweeping through the world and forcing Islam at the point of the sword upon conquered races is one of the most fantastically absurd myths that historians have ever repeated.”

Muslims ruled Spain for 800 years

Muslims ruled Spain for about 800 years. The Muslims in Spain never used the sword to force the people to convert. Later the Christian Crusaders came to Spain and wiped out the Muslims. There was not a single Muslim in Spain who could openly give the adhaan, that is the call for prayers.

More than 80% non-Muslims in India

The Muslims ruled India for about a thousand years. If they wanted, they had the power of converting each and every non-Muslim of India to Islam. Today more than 80% of the population of India are non-Muslims. All these non-Muslim Indians are bearing witness today that Islam was not spread by the sword.

Indonesia and Malaysia

Indonesia is a country that has the maximum number of Muslims in the world. The majority of people in Malaysia are Muslims. May one ask, “which Muslim army went to Indonesia and Malaysia?”

East Coast of Africa

Similarly, Islam has spread rapidly on the East Coast of Africa. One may again ask, if Islam was spread by the sword, “which Muslim army went to the East Coast of Africa?”

No compulsion in religion

With which sword was Islam spread? Even if Muslims had it they could not use it to spread Islam because the Qur’an says in the following verse:

“Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from error”

[Al Qur’an 2:256]

Sword of the Intellect

It is the sword of intellect. The sword that conquers the hearts and minds of people. The Qur’an says in Surah An Nahl, Chapter 16 Verse 125

“Invite (all) to the way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious.”

[Al Qur’an 16:125]

Islam is the fastest growing religion in America and Europe

Today the fastest growing religion in America is Islam. The fastest growing religion in Europe is Islam. Which sword is forcing people in the West to accept Islam in such large numbers?

WAS ISLAM SPREAD BY THE SWORD?

HOW CAN ISLAM BE CALLED THE RELIGION OF PEACE WHEN IT WAS SPREAD BY THE SWORD?

Answer:

It is a common complaint among some non-Muslims that Islam would not have millions of adherents all over the world if it had not been spread by the use of force. The following points will make it clear, that far from being spread by the sword, it was the inherent force of truth, reason and logic that was responsible for the rapid spread of Islam.

Islam means peace

Islam comes from the root word ‘salaam’, which means peace. It also means submitting one’s will to Allah (swt). Thus, Islam is a religion of peace, which is acquired by submitting one’s will to the will of the Supreme Creator, Allah (swt).

Sometimes force has to be used to maintain peace

Each and every human being in this world is not in favor of maintaining peace and harmony. There are many, who would disrupt it for their own vested interests. Sometimes force has to be used to maintain peace. It is precisely for this reason that we have the police who use force against criminals and anti-social elements to maintain peace in the country. Islam promotes peace. At the same time, Islam exhorts its followers to fight where there is oppression. The fight against oppression may, at times, require the use of force. In Islam force can only be used to promote peace and justice.

Opinion of historian De Lacy O’Leary

The best reply to the misconception that Islam was spread by the sword is given by the noted historian De Lacy O’Leary in the book “Islam at the crossroad”

On this, Imam Ahmed bin Hanbal (R.al) said that Allah had not only listened to his dua but had dragged him onto his (the baker’s) doorsteps.

This story is a reminder of the power of saying Istighfar (seeking forgiveness) frequently. Let’s remember that the prophet (s.a.w.s.) used to say Istighfar frequently during the day.

Tafseer Al-Qurtubi states:

A man complained to Al-Hasan (r.a.) about a drought, and he said to him: “Pray to Allah for forgiveness.”

Another man complained to him of poverty and he said to him: “Pray to Allah to forgive you.”

Another man said to him: “Pray to Allah to bless me with a child.” He said: “Pray to Allah for forgiveness.”

Another complained to him that his garden was dry. He said to him: “Pray to Allah for forgiveness.”

He was asked about it and he said: “This is not my personal opinion, for Allah says in Surah Nooh (interpretation of the meaning):

‘Ask forgiveness from your Lord, verily, He is Oft Forgiving; He will send rain to you in abundance. And give you increase in wealth and children, and bestow on you gardens and bestow on you rivers.”

[Tafseer Al-Qurtubi (18/301-302)]

One of the narrators of a Hadith was asked about the manner in which forgiveness is to be sought, to which he answered: “The Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) used to say: “‘Astaghfirullah! Astaghfirullah!” (I beseech Allah for forgiveness, I beseech Allah for forgiveness)’.” [Sahih Muslim].

 BEAUTIFUL STORY ABOUT “ISTIGHFAR”

Imam Ahmed Bin Hanbal (R.al), who is considered as a renowned scholar of Islam. During his old age, while Imam Ahmed (R.al) was travelling he stopped by a town. After the prayers, he wanted to stay for the night in the masjid yard because he didn’t know anyone in the town. Owing to his humility, he hadn’t introduced himself to anyone thinking that if he did, he would be welcomed by many people.

Failing to recognize Ahmed bin Hanbal (R.al), the caretaker of the mosque refused to let him stay in the mosque. As Imam Ahmed (R.al) was quite old, the caretaker had to drag him out of the mosque. On seeing this, a baker from a nearby place felt pity for this man (Imam Ahmed) and offered to be the host to him for the night. During his stay with the baker, Imam Ahmed (R.al) observed that the baker would constantly recite Istighfar (seek forgiveness from Allah).

Imam Ahmed (R.al) asked the baker if the constant practice of saying Istighfar had any effect on him. The baker responded by telling Imam Ahmed (R.al) that Allah had accepted all of his duas (supplications), except one. When he asked him what dua was it that hadn’t been accepted, the baker replied that he had been asking Allah to provide him the privilege to meet the famous scholar Imam Ahmed bin Hanbal (R.al).

 Story of Abraham

Abraham and Ishmael (1)

The Prophet Abraham, PBUH, continued to be childless until Hagar bore him a son, Ishmael. When The Prophet Ishmael, PBUH, was still nursing, Allah SWT chose to test the faith of his beloved Abraham and commanded him to take Hagar and Ishmael to a barren valley of Bakka. In later times, it would be called Mecca.

Indeed, it was a great test, for he and his family had longed for such a time for offspring, and when their eyes were filled with the joy of an heir, the commandment was enacted to take him to a distant land, one known for its barrenness and hardship.

While Quran affirms that this was yet another test for Abraham while Ishmael was still a babe, Abraham, after having sojourned with Hagar and Ishmael, left them there with a skin of water and leather bag full of dates. As Abraham began walking away leaving them behind, Hagar became anxious as to what was happening .Abraham did not look back. Hagar chased him, ‘O Abraham, where are you going, leaving us in this valley where there is no person whose company we can enjoy, nor is there anything here? ’Abraham hurried his pace. Finally, Hagar asked, ‘Has Allah asked you to do so?’ Suddenly, Abraham stopped, turned back and said, ‘Yes!’ Feeling a degree of comfort in this answer, Hagar asked, ‘O Abraham, to whom are you leaving us?’‘ I am leaving you to Allah’s care,’ Abraham replied. Hagar submitted to her Lord, ‘I am satisfied to be with Allah!’ While she traced her way back to little Ishmael, Abraham proceeded until he reached a narrow pass in the mountain where they would not be able to see him. He stopped there and invoked God in prayer: “Our Lord! I have settled some of my offspring in a valley barren from any cultivation, by you Sacred House, our Lord, so they may establish the prayer .So make the hearts of people yearn towards them, and provide them with all types of fruits that they may be grateful.” (Quran 14:37)

Soon, the water and dates were gone and Hagar’s desperation increased. Unable to quench her thirst or to breastfeed her little baby, Hagar began searching for water. Leaving Ishmael under a tree, she began climbing the rocky incline of a nearby hill. ‘Maybe there is a caravan passing by,’ she thought to herself. She ran between the two hills of Safa and Marwa seven times looking for signs of water or help, later personified by all Muslims in Hajj. Fatigued and distraught, she heard a voice, but could not locate its source. Then, looking down in the valley, she saw a dug into the ground at the heel of the baby, and water came gushing out. It was a miracle! Hagar tried to make a basin around it to keep it from flowing out, and filled her skin. ‘This well, called Zamzam, is flowing to this day in the city of Mecca in the Arabian Peninsula. It was not long afterwards that the tribe of Jurham, moving from southern Arabia, stopped by the valley of Mecca after seeing the unusual sight of a bird flying in its direction, which could only mean the presence of water. They eventually settled in Mecca and Ishmael grew up among them.

We should realize that, the important lesson is : Allah SWT never neglects his people.

 JESUS’ (ISA) CRUCIFIXION

But the faith of Islam came with views quite different from that of the extend gospels with regards to both the end of Jesus and his nature. The Glorious Qur’an affirms that Allah the Exalted did not permit the people of Israel to kill Jesus or crucify him. What happened was that Allah saved him from his enemies and raised him to heaven. They never killed Jesus, they killed someone else.

Allah the Almighty declared:

“And because of their saying (in boast), “We killed Messiah Jesus, son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah,” but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but the resemblance of Jesus was put over another man (and they killed that man) and those who differ therein are full of doubts. They have no certain knowledge, they follow nothing but conjecture. For surely; they killed him not (Jesus, son of Mary): But Allah raised him (Jesus) up (with his body and soul) unto Himself (and

he is in the heavens). And Allah is Ever All Powerful, All Wise.

And there is none of the people of the Scripture (Jews & Christians), but must believe in him (Jesus, son of Mary, as only a Messenger of Allah, and a human being0, before his (Jesus or a Jew’s or a Christian’s ) death (at the time of the appearance of the angel of death). And on the Day of Resurrection, he (Jesus) will be a witness against them. ( Ch 4:157-159 Quran)

STORY OF JESUS (ISA) IN QURAN. SOURCE: STORIES OF  THE PROPHETS BY IBN KATHIR

MARY (MARIAM) RECEIVES NEWS OF JESUS (ISA)

While Mary was praying in her temple, an angel in the form of a man appeared before her. Filled with terror, she tried to flee, praying:

“Verily! I seek refuge with the Most Beneficent (Allah) from you, if you do fear Allah.” The angel said: “I am only a Messenger from your Lord, (to announce) to you the gift of a righteous son.” She said: “How can I have a son, when no man has touched me, nor am I unchaste?” He said: “So (it will be), your Lord said: “That is easy for me (Allah): And (We wish) to appoint him as a sign to mankind and a mercy from Us (Allah), and it is a matter (already) decreed, (by Allah).’” (Ch 19:18-21 Quran)

THE MIRACLES OF JESUS (ISA)

Allah the Almighty said:

“Remember when Allah will say (on the Day of Resurrection): “O Jesus, son of Mary! Remember My Favor to you and to your mother when I supported you with Ruh-ul-Qudus (Gabriel) so that you spoke to the people in the cradle and in maturity; and when I taught you writing, Al Hikmah (the power of understanding), the Torah and the Gospel; and when you made out of the clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, by My Permission, and you breathed into it, and it became a bird by My Permission, and you healed those born blind, and the lepers by My Permission, and when you brought forth the dead by My Permission; and when I restrained the Children of Israel from you (when they resolved to kill you) since you came unto them with clear proofs, and the disbeliveers among them said: ‘This is nothing but evident magic.’” And when I (Allah) put in their hearts of the disciples (of Jesus) to believe in Me and My Messenger, they said: “We believe. And bear witness that we are Muslims.” (Ch 5:110-111 Quran).

With great repentance he prayed: “O Rahman Raheem! I had been disobeying you since 40 years! You gave me the opportunity for come back, but I hadn’t utilised the chances. Now I (sincerely) turn to You! Do accept me!” Even his prayer had not completed, rain started pouring heavily!

Musa (AS) was quite astonished! Being astound he said to Allah: “O Lord! Not a single person had gone out of this gathering. What is the reason for rainfall then?”

Allah reply was: “O Musa! It is for that person now I descended the rain, for whom I stopped it.”

Musa (AS) asked Allah: “O Allah! Do expose that person to me!”  Reply from Allah came: “I did not humiliate him at the time he disobeyed me; why would I now humiliate him – when he had come under My Shelter?”

 STORY OF REPENTANCE

At the time of Musa (AS), a terrible famine occurred. People came to Musa (AS) asked him to pray for rain. Musa (AS) took thousand and thousands of people with him and asked Allah. He sought the Help of Allah for the sake of infants, old pious men, and four footed animals. However, no rain came! It was hot all around.

Then Musa (AS) again started praying. He now sought the Support of Allah by saying: “If for any reason my level had been alleviated, for the sake of the Final Messenger – Muhammad (SAW), you may provide shower on us!”

Allah informed Musa (AS): “O Musa! It is not that your levels had gone down! The reason for no rain is that amongst your people there is one person who is disobeying my commands for forty consecutive years. Tell him to get out from your gathering; it is for him I have terminated rainfall.”

It was a very large gathering. Musa (AS) asked Allah: “I have a very low voice. How is it possible that in this large gathering my voice would reach him?” Allah contended him that He would reach His Prophet’s voice to all people.

Musa (AS) announced: “O the sinner, who had been committing sin for 40 consecutive years! Get out from our gathering! It is for you the rain is not coming!”

Listening to this announcement, the sinner looked around and saw that none got out of the gathering! He thought, it is to me whom this is being said. He further thought that when I would get out of this gathering people will see me. Alas! What a humiliation would that be! On the other hand, if I do not get out from here, for me the rain wouldn’t come! Suddenly while pondering on these thoughts, he covered his face with a cloth and started weeping.

This indicates that although Allah will question His servants and judge them, He will only punish for what one is able to protect himself from. As for what one cannot protect himself from, such as what one says to himself – or passing thoughts – they will not be punished for that. We should state here that to dislike the evil thoughts that cross one’s mind is a part of faith. Allah said next,

(He gets a reward for that which he has earned) of good,

(And he is punished for that which he has earned) of evil, that is, concerning the acts that one is responsible for.

Allah then said, ﴿mentioning what the believers said﴾ while directing His servants to supplicate to Him, all the while promising them that He will answer their supplication:

﴿رَبَّنَا لاَ تُؤَاخِذْنَآ إِن نَّسِينَآ أَوْ أَخْطَأْنَا﴾

(“Our Lord! Push us not if we forget or fall into error,”) meaning, “If we forgot an obligation or fell into a prohibition, or made an error while ignorant of its ruling.” We mentioned the Hadith by Abu Hurayrah, that Muslim collected, wherein Allah said, “I shall (accept your supplication).” There is also the Hadith by Ibn `Abbas that Allah said, “I did (accept your supplication).”

(Our Lord! Lay not on us a burden like that which You did lay on those before us (Jews and Christians),) means, “Even if we were able to perform them, do not require us to perform the difficult deeds as You required the previous nations before us, such as the burdens that were placed on them. You sent Your Prophet Muhammad, the Prophet of mercy, to abrogate these burdens through the Law that You revealed to him, the Hanifi (Islamic Monotheism), easy religion.” Muslim recorded that Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allah said that Allah said, “I shall (accept your supplication).” Ibn `Abbas narrated that the Messenger of Allah said that Allah said, “I did (accept your supplication).” There is the Hadith recorded through various chains of narration that the Messenger of Allah said,

«بُعِثْتُ بِالْحَنِيفِيَّةِ السَّمْحَة»

(I was sent with the easy Hanifiyyah way.)

(Our Lord! Put not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear) of obligations, hardships and afflictions, do not make us bear what we cannot bear of this.

(Our Lord! Put not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear.)

We mentioned that Allah said, “I shall (accept your supplication)” in one narration, and, “I did (accept your supplication),” in another narration.

(Pardon us) meaning, between us and You regarding what You know of our shortcomings and errors.

(And grant us forgiveness) concerning what is between us and Your servants. So do not expose our errors and evil deeds to them.

(Have mercy on us) in what will come thereafter. Therefore, do not allow us to fall into another error. They say that those who commit error need three things: Allah’s forgiveness for what is between Him and them, that He conceals these errors from His other servants, and thus does not expose them before the servants, and that He grants them immunity from further error.” We mentioned before that Allah answered these pleas, “I shall,” in one narration and, “I did,” in another narration.

(You are our Mawla) meaning, You are our supporter and helper, our trust is in You, You are sought for each and every type of help and our total reliance is on You. There is no power or strength except from You.

(And give us victory over the disbelieving people) those who rejected Your religion, denied Your Oneness, refused the Message of Your Prophet, worshipped other than You and associated others in Your worship. Give us victory and make us prevail above them in this and the Hereafter. Allah said, “I shall,” in one narration, and, “I did,” in the Hadith that Muslim collected from Ibn `Abbas.

Further, Ibn Jarir recorded that Abu Ishaq said that whenever Mu`adh would finish reciting this Surah,

(And give us victory over the disbelieving people), he would say “Amin.”

 Allah said,

(Each one believes in Allah, His Angels, His Books, and His Messengers. (They say,) “We make no distinction between one another of His Messengers.”)

Therefore, each of the believers believes that Allah is the One and Only and the Sustainer, there is no deity worthy of worship except Him and there is no Lord except Him. The believers also believe in all Allah’s Prophets and Messengers, in the Books that were revealed from heaven to the Messengers and Prophets, who are indeed the servants of Allah. Further, the believers do not differentiate between any of the Prophets, such as, believing in some of them and rejecting others. Rather, all of Allah’s Prophets and Messengers are, to the believers, truthful, righteous, and they were each guided to the path of righteousness, even when some of them bring what abrogates the Law of some others by Allah’s leave. Later on, the Law of Muhammad, the Final Prophet and Messenger from Allah, abrogated all the laws of the Prophets before him. So the Last Hour will commence while Muhammad’s Law remains the only valid Law, and all the while a group of his Ummah will always be on the path of truth, apparent and dominant. Allah’s statement,

(And they say, “We hear, and we obey”) means, we heard Your statement, O our Lord, comprehended and implemented it, and adhered to its implications.

((We seek) Your forgiveness, our Lord) contains a plea and supplication for Allah’s forgiveness, mercy and kindness.

Allah’s statement,

(Allah burdens not a person beyond his scope) means, Allah does not ask a soul what is beyond its ability. This only demonstrates Allah’s kindness, compassion and generosity towards His creation. This Ayah is the Ayah that abrogated the Ayah that worried the Companions, that is, Allah’s statement,

(And whether you disclose what is in yourselves or conceal it, Allah will call you to account for it.)

Ibn `Abbas said, `When this Ayah was revealed, it was very hard on the Companions of the Messenger of Allah and worried them tremendously. They said: O Messenger of Allah! We know that we would be punished according to our statements and our actions, but as for what occurs in our hearts, we do not control what is in them.’ The Messenger of Allah said,

«قُولُوا: سَمِعْنَا وَأَطَعْنَا»

(Say, `We hear and we obey.’) They said, `We hear and we obey.’ Thereafter, this Ayah abrogated the previous Ayah,

(The Messenger believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and (so do) the believers. Each one believes in Allah), until,

(Allah burdens not a person beyond his scope. He gets a reward for that (good) which he has earned, and he is punished for that (evil) which he has earned.)

Therefore, they were pardoned what happens in their hearts, and were held accountable only for their actions.”’

The Group recorded that Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allah said,

«إِنَّ اللهَ تَجَاوَزَ لِي عَنْ أُمَّتِي مَا حَدَّثَتْ بِهِ أَنْفُسَهَا مَالَمْ تَكَلَّمْ أَوْ تَعْمَل»

(Allah has pardoned my Ummah for what they say to themselves, as long as they do not utter it or act on it.)

The Two Sahihs recorded that Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allah said,

(Allah said (to His angels), “If My servant intends to commit an evil deed, do not record it as such for him, and if he commits it, write it for him as one evil deed. If he intends to perform a good deed, but did not perform it, then write it for him as one good deed, and if he performs it, write it for him as ten good deeds.”)

(285. The Messenger believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and (so do) the believers. Each one believes in Allah, His Angels, His Books, and His Messengers. (They say,) “We make no distinction between one another of His Messengers ـ and they say, “We hear, and we obey. (We seek) Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the return (of all).”) (286. Allah burdens not a person beyond his scope. He gets reward for that (good) which he has earned, and he is punished for that (evil) which he has earned. “Our Lord! Punish us not if we forget or fall into error, our Lord! Lay not on us a burden like that which You did lay on those before us (Jews and Christians); our Lord! Put not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear. Pardon us and grant us forgiveness. Have mercy on us. You are our Mawla (Patron, Supporter and Protector) and give us victory over the disbelieving people.”) The Hadiths on the Virtue of These Two Ayat, May Allah Benefit Us by Them Al-Bukhari recorded that Abu Mas`ud said that the Messenger of Allah said,

«مَنْ قَرَأَ بِالْآيَتَيْنِ مِنْ آخِرِ سُورَةِ الْبَقَرَةِ فِي لَيْلَةٍ، كَفَتَاه»

(Whoever recites the last two Ayat in Surat Al-Baqarah at night, they will suffice for him.)

LAST TWO AYAHS OF SURAH AL-BAQARAH

THE IMPORTANCE OF SURAH AL-BAQARAH VERSES 285-286

(The Messenger believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and (so do)the believers. Each one believes in Allah, His Angels, His Books, and His Messengers. (They say,) “We make no distinction between one another of His Messengers ـ and they say, “We hear, and we obey. (We seek) Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the return (of all).”)

When they did that, Allah abrogated the Ayah ﴿2:284﴾ and sent down the Ayah,

(Allah burdens not a person beyond his scope. He gets a reward for that (good) which he has earned, and he is punished for that (evil) which he has earned. “Our Lord! Punish us not if we forget or fall into error.”) until the end.”

Muslim recorded it with the wording; “When they did that, Allah abrogated it ﴿2:284﴾ and sent down,

(Allah burdens not a person beyond his scope. He gets reward or that (good) which he has earned, and he is punished for that (evil) which he has earned. “Our Lord! Punish us not if we forget or fall into error”.)

Allah said, `I shall (accept your supplication),’

(“Our Lord! Lay not on us a burden like that which You did lay on those before us (Jews and Christians)”)

Allah said, `I shall (accept your supplication),’

(“Our Lord! Put not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear. ”)

Allah said, `I shall (accept your supplication),’

(“Pardon us and grant us forgiveness. Have mercy on us. You are our Mawla (Supporter and Protector) and give us victory over the disbelieving people.”)

Allah said, `I shall.”’

Imam Ahmad recorded that Mujahid said, “I saw Ibn `Abbas and said to him, `O Abu Abbas! I was with Ibn `Umar, and he read this Ayah and cried.’ He asked, `Which Ayah’ I said,

`(And whether you disclose what is in yourselves or conceal it.)’

The King then ordered some of his courtiers to take the boy on board a boat into the middle of the sea, saying, “Then if he turns apostate [all well and good], otherwise toss him into the sea.” So they took him and he said, “0 Allah! Save me from them by anything You wish.” So the boat capsized and all the courtiers) were drowned. The boy then came walking to the king. The King said, “What did your companions do?” The boy replied, ‘Allaah saved me ham them.” And he further said to the king, “You cannot kill me till you do what I command” The King said, “What is that (command)?” The boy said, “Gather all the people in an upland place, and fasten me aver the trunk of a tree. Then take an arrow from my quiver and fix it in the bow and say: ‘In the Name of Allah, the Lord of the boy’ and shoot (at me). If you do that, you will kill me.” So the king gathered the people in an upland place and fastened the boy over a tree-trunk, took on arrow from his quiver, fixed it in the bow and said, “‘In the Name of Allah, the Lord of the boy’, and shot the arrow. The arrow hit over the temple of the boy, and the boy put his hand over the temple at the point where the arrow hit and then died. The people proclaimed, “We have believed in the Lord of the boy! We have believed in the Lord of the boy! We have believed in the Lord of the boy!”

The king came and it was said to him, “That is the thing which you were afraid of, by Allah! The thing which you

were afraid of has be fallen you: the people have believed [in Allah]!”

So he ordered for deep ditches to be dug at the entrances of the roads and it was done.

Then fire was kindled in those ditches, and the king ordered that whoever did not turn apostate be cast into the ditches, and it was done. Then there came a woman with her baby.

She nearly retreated back from the ditch [i.e. turned apostate] but the baby [spoke and] said, “0 mother! Be patient, you are on the Truth!” (So she threw herself in the ditch of the fire along with her child, to be with the martyrs in Al-Jannah).” [Saheeh Muslim]

This is the inspiring story of a boy who believed in Allah, remained steadfast against the unbelieving king and gave up his life for the sake of conveying the message of Tawheed to

his people. Appropriately, this story was revealed in Makkah at a time when the Makkan pagans were doing their best to annihilate the Muslims and make them return to disbelief. This Soorah, and the explanatory hadeeth along with it, gave them a timely reminder that the persecutors are not beyond the watch of Allah, and in the end, victory will always be theirs. There are many beneficial points which we too can pick up from this story. It tells us for example, that if someone sincerely seeks the Guidance, then Allah will bestow it upon him, just as Allah guided the boy when he sought Allah’s help in deciding between the sorcerer and the monk. Even though the boy used to admire the teachings of the monk, he did not simply rely on his own personal judgment to decide the important matter of who to take Ilm (knowledge) from. Instead, he beseeched Allah just as we too have been commanded to beseech Allah’s Aid: “You alone we worship and You alone we ask for help.” [Al-Faatihah 5]

So seeking Allah’s help is not only for worldly matters (e.g. passing exams, removing debts etc.], but we should also ask Allah to help us in matters of worship to increase our eemaan, to purify our intentions, to guide us to the best teachers and the best books etc).

 The People Of The Ditch

Second Part

The king asked him, “Who has given you bock your sight?’ The courtier said, “My Lord, Allah!” The king said, “Do you have another Lord besides me?” The courtier sold, “My Lord and your Lord is Allah I” The king got hold of him and kept on tormenting him until he informed him about the boy. So the boy was brought. The king said to the boy, ‘0 boy! Has your [knowledge of) sorcery reached to the extent that you can cure born-blinds, lepers, leucodermic patients and do such and such?” The boy replied, “I do not cure anybody it is only Allah who cures.” Then the king got hold of him and kept on tormenting him till he informed him about the monk. And the monk was brought and it was said to him, “Give up your Religion” The monk refused to turn apostate. Then the king ordered a sow and it was put in the middle of his (the monk’s) scalp and was sawn, till he fell, cut in two pieces. Then that courtier was brought and it was said to him, “Give up your religion I” The courtier refused to turn apostate. So the saw was put in the middle of his scalp and was sawn, till he fell cut in two pieces. Then the boy was brought, and it was said to him, “Give up your religion!” The boy refused to turn apostate. So the King ordered some of his courtiers to take the boy to such and such a mountain, saying, “Then ascend up the mountain with him till you reach its top. Then see if he turns apostate, otherwise throw him down from its top.” They took him, ascended up the mountain, and the boy said, “0 Allaah Save me from them by anything You wish” So the mountain shook and all of them tell down and the boy came walking to the king. The king asked him, “What did your companions do?” The boy said, ‘Allah saved me from them.”

Al-Hamd (Praises to Allah) – It is also named Al-Hamd, the Praise, because it contains mention of hamd just as Al-Baqarah is named so because it contains mention of the cow. Some scholars also gave the reasoning that Al-Hamd comprises heart of Al-Fatihah.

* As-Salah (The Prayer) – It is named the Prayer because its recitation is a condition for the validity of the prayer.

* Ash-Shifa – It is also named Ash-Shifa’, the Cure, due to what Ad-Darimi reports on the authority of Abu Sa’id that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “The Opening of the Book is a cure to every poison.”

* Ar-Ruqyah – It is also named Ar-Ruqya, the Spiritual Cure due to the hadith of Abu Sa’id reported by Bukhari that after he had recited it to cure a person who had been bitten by a scorpion, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) asked him, “…And what made you to know that it was a ruqya.”

* Asas al-Quran (the Foundation of the Quran) – Ash-Sha’bi records on the authority of Ibn Abbas that he named it , and that he said, “The foundation of Al-Fatihah is, “Bismillah…” (with the Name of Allah, the All-Merciful, the Most Merciful.)

Other scholars have also named it as “Al-Kanz (“the Treasure), Ash-Shukr (Gratitude), ad-Dua (Supplication), Ash-Shafiyah (the sufficient), “Al-Kafiyah” (the Sufficient), “Al-Wafiyah”, the Fulfillment and more.

REVELATION OF SURAH AL-FATIHAH

It was revealed in Mecca as stated by Ibn Abbas, Qatadah and Abu’l-Aliyah.. It is also postulated that it was revealed in Madinah as stated by Abu Hurayrah, Mujahid, ‘Ata ibn Yasar and Az-Zuhri. It is also said that it was revealed on two separate occasions – once in Makkah and once in Madinah.

However the first opinion is the most likely due to Allah’s saying, “We have sent to you the Seven Oft Repeated Verses.” [Al-Hijr 15:87] This verse was revealed in Makkah by agreement of the exegeses.

According to the prophet (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), Surah Al-Fatihah is considered as “the greatest Surah” of the Quran

THE POPULAR NAMES OF SURAH AL-FATIHAH ARE THE FOLLOWING:

* Al-Fatihah (The Opening) – It is named Al-Fatihah, the Opening – because it opens the Book and by it the recitation in prayer commences.

* Umm al-Quran (Mother of the Quran) – According to At-Tirmidhi on the authority of Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, “The chapter commencing with] “All praises and thanks are due to Allah.

The Lord of the Worlds” is the Mother of the Quran, the Mother of the Book, the Seven Oft Repeated Verses and the Great Quran.” Ibn Jarir at-Tabari said that it was named so because the meaning of the entire Quran is summarised therein. The Arabs named anything that concisely summarises something or comprises its most important part, Umm, or Mother.

* Umm al-Kitab (Mother of the Book) – Al-Bukhari said in the beginning of the Book of Tafsir in his Sahih: “It is named Umm al-Quran because it is the first chapter written in the Quranic texts and the recitation in prayer commences with it.”

* Sab’ul-Mathani (The Seven Oft Repeated Verses) – It is also named Sab’ul-Mathani, the Seven Oft Repeated Verses, because they are frequently recited and indeed recited in every rakaah of the prayer.

Allah SWT says in the Quran:

“And indeed, We have bestowed upon you seven of Al-Mathani (the seven repeatedly recited Verses), (i.e. Surat Al-Fatiha) and the Grand Quran. [Quran: Surah Al-Hijr (87)]”

IBN KATHIR WRITES IN HIS COMMENTARY ON SURAH AL-KAHF:

Al-Bara reported: A man recited Surah al-Kahf and there was an animal in the house which began acting in a nervous manner. He looked and saw a fog or cloud overhead. He mentioned this to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and the Prophet said:

اقْرَأْ فُلَانُ فَإِنَّهَا السَّكِينَةُ تَنَزَّلَتْ عِنْدَ الْقُرْآنِ أَوْ تَنَزَّلَتْ لِلْقُرْآنِ

Continue reciting. Verily, that was tranquility which came down for the recitation of the Quran.

 Their Prophet then proclaimed,

“The sign of the blessings of Talut’s kingship over you is that Allah will give you back the Tabut wooden box that has been taken from you.” Surat Al–Baqarah – verse  20

The angels came down while carrying the Tabut between the sky and the earth, until they placed it before Talut(A.S) while the people were watching. Then when Talut (A.S) set out with the army, he said:

“Verily, Allah will try you by a river. So whoever drinks thereof, he is not of me; and whoever tastes it not, he is of me, except him who takes (thereof) in the hollow of his hand.‘ al-Baqarah 2:249

Talut (A.S), marched forth with his soldiers and the Israelites who obeyed him. His army was of eighty thousand. When thy reached on the river they all drank thereof,  except a few of them. But Whoever took some of it the river’s water in the hollow of his hand, quenched his thirst; as for those who drank freely from it, their thirst was not quenched.

Israelites who remained with king thought that they were few in the face of their enemy who were many then. So, their knowledgeable scholars strengthened their resolve by stating that Allah’s promise is true and that triumph comes from Allah Alone, not from the large numbers or the adequacy of the supplies. When the faithful party, who were few under the command of Talut, faced their enemy, who were many under the command of Jalut. They prayed:

“Our Lord! Pour forth on us patience and send down patience on us from You. And set firm our feet against the enemy and save us from running away and from feebleness.” And make us victorious over the disbelieving people. Allah said:

“They defeated and overwhelmed them by Allah’s aid and support. Then and Dawud Eliminated Jalut.” Talut promised that whoever Eliminated Jalut, would marry his daughter and would share his kingship and authority. He kept his promise. Later, the kingship was transferred to Prophet Dawud in addition to being granted Prophethood by Allah.

 Taloot and Jaloot

In the offsprings of bani Israeel only a pregnant woman remained, in who the prophet hood still appeared. She was a widow so the Israelites kept her in a house so that Allah may give her a boy, who would be their Prophet. The woman also kept invoking Allah to grant her a boy. Allah heard her Duas and gave her a boy whom she called `Shamwil. Some people said that the boy’s name was Sham`un (Simeon). As that boy grew, Allah raised him to be a righteous person. When he reached the age of prophethood, Allah revealed to him and commanded him to call his people to Him. Shamwil called the sons of Israel Nation to Allah and they asked him to appoint a king over them so that they could fight their enemies under his command.

The kingship had also ended among them. Dawud (A.S) said to them, “What if Allah appoints a king over you, would you fulfill your vow to fight under his command’‘

They said, “Why should we not fight in Allah’s way while we have been driven out of our homes. But when fighting was ordered for them, they turned away, all except a few of them. Only a few of them kept their promise, but the majority abandoned. And Allah has full knowledge of them.”

When the Israelites asked their Prophet to appoint a king over them, Hazrat Dawud (A.S) appointed Talut, who was then a soldier. But, Talut was not a descendant of the house of kings. Theydid not accept him. They said that Talut was also poor and did not have the wealth that justifies him being king. Some people stated that Talut (A.S) used to bring water to the people, while others stated that his profession was dyeing skins. Thus, they disputed with their Prophet while they were supposed to obey him and to say good words to him. Dawud (A.S) stated, “I did not choose Talut (A.S) to be your king on my own. Rather, Allah has commanded that upon your and has increased him abundantly in knowledge and stature. `Talut is more knowledgeable and honorable than you, and stronger and more patient during combat, and has more knowledge of warfare. The king should have sufficient knowledge, be fair looking and should have a strong soul and Allah grants His kingdom to whom He wills. Allah Alone is the Supreme Authority Who does what He wills and no one can ask Him about His actions, while they will be asked about their actions by Him. This is because Allah has perfect knowledge, wisdom and kindness with His creation.

 LOOK AT ALLAH‘S MERCY

Allah says:

As for the one who receives his book in his Right hand.

He will say “Here read my record”

The Overwhelming majority of us, we have sinned and we have done a lot of bad deeds and it is written in our Book of Deeds!

As Allah says

And over you are guardians

Honoured scribes

They know all that which you do.

So how does it make sense that a person will say Here Read my Record when he has these sins?

Abdullah ibn Hanzalah رضي الله عنه said , “Verily, Allah will stop His servant on the Day of Judgement and He will make his sins appear on the outside of his Book of Records. Then He will say to him, `Did you do this’ The servant will respond, `Yes my Lord.’ Then Allah will say to him, `I will not expose you (or dishonor you) for it, for verily, I have forgiven you. ‘

The person will then say, `Here (you all) read my Book!”

Look at the Rahma and the Mughfirah of Allah ﷻ that he turns the bad into good for his slave on Qiyamah.

And the one who receives his Book in his right, Allah says about him

Surely, His accounting will be an easy accounting.

And he will return to his people, joyfully.

Meaning His Judgement and Accounting will be done quickly and Allah will admit him into Jannah quickly.

And He will enter Jannah and meet his Family.

Opinion 1 says he will meet his family of paradise.

Opinion 2 says he will be with the family of Dunya in Paradise.

Never ever think that Allah won’t forgive you!

This here is a proof, that even on a day when there is no repentance, Allah will be forgiving people out of his Rahma.

And to think or say “Allah will not forgive me” is disrespectful to Allah!

Some of Allah’s qualities are Ghafir, Ghaffar and Ghafoor and Rahman, Raheem and Afwuh.

So why would he not forgive.

But we shouldn’t wait for Qiyamah.

Seek his Rahma now!

Ask for forgiveness!

THE SEVEN UNDER THE SHADE OF ALLAH (SWT)

The Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h.) said: “There are seven whom Allah will shade in His Shade on the Day when there is no shade except His Shade: a just ruler; a youth who grew up in the worship of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic; a man whose heart is attached to the mosques; two men who love each other for Allah’s sake, meeting for that and parting upon that; a man who is called by a woman of beauty and position (for illegal intercourse), but he says: ‘I fear Allah’, a man who gives in charity and hides it, such that his left hand does not know what his right hand gives in charity; and a man who remembered Allah in private and so his eyes shed tears.'” Saheeh al-Bukhari and Muslim

In this beautiful Hadith, the Prophet (p.b.u.h.) spoke about small acts of worship which result in such a great reward: shade on the Day when there will be no shade except His Shade.

This may not seem like much at first but then reflect upon the following Hadith: ‘On the Day of Resurrection, the sun would draw so close to the people that there would be left a distance of only one mile. The people will be submerged in perspiration according to their deeds, some up to their ankles, some up to their knees, some up to the waist and some would have the bridle of perspiration and, while saying this, the Messenger of Allah put his hand towards his mouth.’ Saheeh Muslim

And in another Hadith, some will be submerged in sweat ‘seventy arm-lengths in the earth.’ Saheeh al-Bukhari and Muslim

So who would want more then, on this Day, than to be under the Shade and protection of Allah Azza wa Jall?

Let us examine now the characteristics and virtues of these seven categories of people who will be worthy of such an exalted position on the Day of Gathering:

1- ‘A JUST RULER’

The concept of Justice in Islam is very important and it is something which the Muslim – Ruler and the ruled – must apply in all matters without exception. Justice means to give each the right he deserves: Muslim or non-Muslim, relative or stranger, friend or enemy. Allah says: ‘…And do not let hatred cause you to act unjustly, that is nearer to piety (al-Maa’idah 8).

Unfortunately, even if we admit this in theory, we quickly forget it in practice. So we find that when we speak about our friends and loved ones, we praise them beyond reason and when we speak about those whom we hold difference with, we can find no good in them and we just capitalize on their bad points.

This is far removed from the justice which Allah loves and gives great reward for, as mentioned in the following Hadith: ‘The doers of justice will be on thrones of light at Allah’s Right Hand – and both of Allah’s Hands are Right Hands” – those who were just in their Ruling, with their families and in all that over which they were given authority.

The Prophet assigning to Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud the open spaces in Madina between the dwellings and palm gardens of the Ansar, and when the Banu Abd Ibn Zuhrah said, “Remove from us the son of Umm Abd (Ibn Mas’ud),” replying, ‘Why then did Allah send me? Allah does not bless a people among whom a weak man is not given his right.'” (Sunan at-Tirmidhi no.3003)

The concept of justice is most important for the Ruler, since he is in charge of his people and the primary disposer of justice in the land. For this reason, the Ruler is given special mention as one of the seven who will be honored with Allah’s Shade.

2 ‘A YOUTH WHO GREW UP IN THE WORSHIP OF ALLAH’

The great scholar, Ayyoob as-Sakhtiyaanee (d.131H) said, “From the success of youth is that Allah guides him to a scholar of the Sunnah. (Hasan – Reported in Sharh Usoolis-Sunnah of al-Laalikaa’ee no.30).

Indeed, it is a great blessing from Allah for a youth to be guided towards worship and befriended by the righteous, since it is in youth that a person is most vulnerable to the temptations of life and liable to drift away from the Islamic Path.

This becomes apparent when we look at society around us and we see that most of the worldly distractions, such as music, games, clubs, fashion etc. are all specifically targeted at the young. “You’re only young once!” they are told, which is why many Muslims nowadays waste their youth thinking that they will pray, wear Hijaab and go to Hajj, etc. when they are old, as if they have a guarantee of longevity from Allah!

How well we would do to heed the Prophet’s advice when he said: ‘Take benefit of five before five: your youth before your old age, your health before your sickness, your wealth before your poverty, your free time before you are preoccupied and your life before your death.’ Sahih – Narrated by Ibn Abbaas

 THE AMAZING RACE TO ALLAH

Imagine three people running a race of equal athletic ability. one with hidden weights attached to their body, one carrying a heavy load on their back, and a third person without any weights or loads running freely.

The first person has weights strapped on to every inch of their body, so they don’t see the load they carry but they just feel heavy and exhausted, and in a short amount of time, they burn out. They keep trying but keep burning out quickly every time.

The second person is trying to run while carrying a heavy load they recognise and see is on their backs, but they are still determined to run. Unfortunately, the load they carry slips around and even distracts their vision from the racecourse so they veer off in the wrong direction often. Because they won’t simply let go of the load, even coming back to the racecourse itself becomes its own challenge.

The third person has no weights or loads. They are free to run without anything holding them down. They feel light as the wind, and they actually enjoy the run.

Allah subhanahu wa ta`ala (exalted is He) mentions in the Qur’an:

“[…] So race to all that is good. […]” (Qur’an 2:148 and 5:48)

“Race toward forgiveness from your Lord and a Garden whose width is like the width of the heavens and earth, prepared for those who believed in Allah and His messengers. That is the bounty of Allah which He gives to whom He wills, and Allah is the possessor of great bounty.” (Qur’an 57:21)

“And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a garden as wide as the heavens and earth, prepared for the righteous.” (Qur’an 3:133)

“It is these who race for the good deeds, and they are foremost in them.” (Qur’an 23:61)

“And the foremost in the race, the foremost in the race. Those are the ones brought near to Allah.” (Qur’an 56:10-11)

Negative emotions, when held onto, become part of the attachments of dunya (this world). They are the weights attached to the runner as they try to run to Allah (swt) and get exhausted early. A traumatic life event is the heavy load that someone carries over their shoulders after the calamity has passed and they have the ability to put it down.

The general rule in Islam is we always pray and strive for the best. We don’t ask for the lowest level of Jannah and we don’t ask to be a weaker Muslim in the race. We ask to be strong Muslims, to reach the Highest Paradise; we ask for good in this life and the next; and we seek refuge from all that is heavy upon us in the race to Allah (swt).

The Prophet ﷺ (peace be upon him) taught us, “The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, while there is good in both.”

The intended meaning of strength here is a firm will and a desire to work for the Hereafter. So the one being described as a strong believer is more bold and stern against the enemy in Jihad, quicker to go out and searching for striving in Allah’s path, more in his enjoining the good and forbidding the evil, in his patience with the harms he faces throughout, and stronger in the way he carries out difficult tasks for Allah’s sake.

He loves to pray, fast, make dhikr (remembrance of Allah), and perform the rest of the acts of worship, and he is more active in seeking after these affairs, as he keeps a closer watch over his performance of them.

 - Respect all the great Scholars of Islam

We must respect all the great scholars of Islam, including the four Imaams, Imam Abu Hanifa, Imam Shafa’ee, Imam Humbal and Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on all of them). They were great scholars and may Allah reward them for their research and hard work.

6- Some may argue by quoting the hadith of our beloved Prophet (PBUH) from Sunan Abu Dawood, Vol. 5 Hadith 4596. In this hadith, the prophet (PBUH) is reported to have said, “My community will be split up into seventy-three sects.”

This hadith reports that the prophet(PBUH) predicted the emergence of seventy-three sects. He did not say that Muslims should be active in dividing themselves into sects. The Glorious Qur’an commands us not to create sects. Those who follow the teachings of the Qur’an and Sahih Hadith, and do not create sects are the people who are on the true path.

According to Tirmidhi, Vol. 5, Hadith 2641, Abdullah ibn Amr narrated that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, “My Ummah will split into seventy-three sects. All of them are in the Fire except one sect”. He said: “And which is it O! Messenger of Allah?” He said: “What I am upon and my Companions.”

The Glorious Qur’an mentions in several verses, “Obey Allah and obey His Messenger”. A true Muslim should only follow the Glorious Qur’an and the Sahih Hadith. He can agree with the views of any scholar as long as they conform to the teachings of the Qur’an and Sahih Hadith. If such views go against the Word of Allah, or the Sunnah of His Prophet, (PBUH) then they carry no weight, regardless of how learned the scholar might be.

If only all Muslims read the Qur’an with understanding and adhere to Sahih Hadith, InshAllah most of these differences would be solved and we could be one united Muslim Ummah.

WHY ARE MUSLIMS DIVIDED INTO SECTS?

When all Muslims follow one and same Qur’an then why are there so many sects among Muslims?

Answer:

1- Muslims should be united

It is a fact that Muslims today, are divided amongst themselves. The tragedy is that such divisions are not endorsed by Islam at all. Islam believes in fostering unity amongst its followers.

The Glorious Qur’an says: “And hold fast, all together, by the rope which Allah (stretches out for you), and be not divided among yourselves;” [Al Qur’an 3:103]

Which is the rope of Allah that is being referred to in this verse? It is the Glorious Qur’an. The Glorious Qur’an is the rope of Allah which all Muslims should hold fast together. There is a double emphasis in this verse. Besides saying ‘hold fast all together’ it also says, ‘be not divided’.

The Qur’an further says: “Obey Allah and obey the Messenger” [Al Qur’an 4:59]

All the Muslims should follow the Qur’an and authentic ahadith and be not divided among themselves.

2- It is prohibited to make sects and divisions in Islam

The Glorious Qur’an says: “As for those who divide their religion and break up into sects, thou hast no part in them in the least: Their affair is with Allah: He will, in the end, tell them the truth of all that they did.” [Al Qur’an 6:159]

In this verse, Allah (SWT) says that one should disassociate oneself from those who divide their religion and break it up into sects.

3- Our Prophet was a Muslim

One may ask such Muslims, “what was our beloved prophet (PBUH)? He was a Muslim, like all the other prophets and messengers of Allah before him.

It is mentioned in Chapter 3 Verse 52 of Al Qur’an that Jesus (PBUH) was a Muslim.

Further, in Chapter 3 Verse 67, Al Qur’an says that Ibraheem (PBUH) was not a Jew or a Christian but was a Muslim.

4- Qur’an says call yourselves Muslim

“Who is better in speech than one who calls (men) to Allah, works righteousness, and says, ‘I am of those Who bow in Islam (Muslim)?’ ”[Al Qur’an 41:33]

The Qur’an says “Say I am of those who bow in Islam”. In other words, say, “I am a Muslim”.

We have known before that Shaitan will try to make us hopeless and misguided away from our way to Allah. Allah Almighty says about Shaitan words  “Satan said, “Because You have put me in error, I will surely sit in wait for them on Your straight path.” Quran 7:16

How does he do that?

The answer is “Then I will come to them from right in front of their hands and from behind them and on their right and on their left, and You will not find most of them grateful [to You].”  7:17

How do these attacks work ?!

Shaitan is invisible and we don’t see him. But he whispers, “Who whispers [evil] into the chests  of mankind” 114:5. This Arabic word “chests” is used also for emotions. So it’s refer to emotions like anger, greed, fear, love, happiness, etc. These are normal emotions. They are part of who we are. And Naturally we attract to the beautiful things. But Shaitan uses these feelings and manipulate them. He’ll use your anger to mess you up. He’ll use your sadness to mess you up.

What is Shitan goal?

He wants to take that feeling out of balance, to make you do anything that you can get it. To make you don’t care about the consequences of sins. He excites your feeling and says why do you have to wait! why can’t you have what you want right now! He comes at you right in front of you and you can’t see anything else but what you desire. And you don’t think what damage it will do to yourself or the others… you’re just  completely led on by him! That is actually one of the great attacks of Shaitan from the front.

The other meaning for “I will attack them from the front of their hands” is about the future. To block your eyes from seeing what is ahead of us which at the end will be meeting with Allah. Whether you like it or not. Whether you want to accept that or not. We’re all heading that way with every breath that we take. And that meeting is unavoidable. Shaitan doesn’t want you to see that. To see that with every passing day we are getting closer to meet Allah and then tomorrow we’re even closer. All he wants from you is to think that future isn’t meeting with Allah but meeting your friends! But meeting with some holidays, having good times. He wants you to think about the future with what’s right in front of you not the long long term. Thinking about future’s education, home ownership, gaining some skills, raising up your children in a good manner, building up business and all of that stuff are long term thinking and these are good things. But actually Allah wants you to have even longer term thinking.

Shaitan doesn’t even blind your eyes from the future of meeting Allah but also he will make you pessimistic about the future …

-Nothing is going to work out

-It’s going to be bad

-It’s always going to fail

And you become so negative and your negativity becomes infectious. We have to have hope in Allah and ask him. But you cut that off by pessimism.
