About eight years ago, I attended a depression mastery seminar by a prominent Muslim shaykh. At the time, I was learning about Muslims who have suicide attempts. In the back of my mind, I vaguely understood that suicide wasn’t allowed in Islam. But wondered why did Muslims who practiced their faith regularly still tried to kill themselves.

At the end of the seminar, I went up to the teacher and asked, “If a Muslim commits suicide, what happens to them.” I also shared some stories of some people I knew who were facing severe thoughts of ending their lives. After hearing my spiel, he simply said, “If a person kills himself or herself, they’re going straight to hell.” I still remember those words and the way he said them and the way they made me feel. I shook right to my brain. Alhamdulillah, this one powerful statement has left a lasting mark on me for years and allows me to help Muslims going through severe depression. The problem isn’t that we are unaware of this ayah “Nor kill yourselves”[i] in the Quran. The bigger issue is who has “real” suicide issues and who is merely having thoughts like, “Oh my God, my kids are driving me nuts! I just want to kill myself.”

the Sharee‘ah (Islamic legislation) has assigned inheritance

Allah The Almighty has honored man in this worldly life and preferred him over many creatures, as confirmed by His Statement (which means): {And We have certainly honored the children of Aadam (Adam) and carried them on the land and sea and provided for them of the good things and preferred them over much of what We have created, with [definite] preference.} [Quran 17:70]

Man has been made a successor to authority, which makes him in need of the means that guarantee his survival, maintain his succession to authority and sustain his worldly affairs.
Allah The Almighty has made property a means of sustenance, as shown in His statement (which means): {And do not give the weak-minded your property, which Allah has made a means of sustenance for you.} [Quran 4:5]
Money sustains the worldly interests of people, and it is the means by which they fulfill their requirements. Man needs it as long as he is living, and once he dies, he no longer needs it. Thus, it is necessary to have a successor and a new owner of his property. If the new owner is someone who is capable of taking the property by force and overpowering others, then, it would lead to mutual hatred and disputes among people, and inheritance would be subject to power struggles and strife. If, on the other hand, the property is assigned (after one's death) to cats, dogs, and domestic animals -- which is sometimes the case in some laws -- surely, the people's benefits and interests will be lost and their needs will not be met.
For this reason, the Sharee‘ah (Islamic legislation) has assigned inheritance to the deceased person's relatives so that people would rest assured of the destiny of their property, as they are naturally eager to benefit those with whom they have a strong relationship of blood, marital relation or allegiance. If a person dies and leaves property, according to the Islamic Sharee‘ah that takes into consideration  all the benefits of people, it should be distributed among his relatives with justice. This means distributing the inheritance beginning with the closest and then the next of kin to him and so on, like the children, the father and those next to them in the degree of kinship. Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion.} [Quran 5:3]

women visiting the Prophet's Mosque

a) Visiting the grave of the Prophet  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) before praying in the mosque.

b) Making supplication facing the grave.

c) Seeking nearness to Allah by means of the Prophet. This is a prohibited form of Tawassul.

d) Seeking intercession from the Prophet.

e) Placing the hands upon the grills around the room containing the Prophet's grave to seek blessings, etc. Remember the Prophet's sayings: "Do not make my grave an 'Eed (place of celebration)..." "May Allah's Curse be on the Jews and Christians for taking the graves of their Prophets as places of worship."

13 - Many scholars state that women visiting the Prophet's Mosque may pronounce their Salaam upon the Prophet  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) away from the gravesite since it is confirmed by many Ahadeeth that the Salaam is related to the Prophet wherever the person may be. However, the position of the scholars regarding visiting the gravesites by women can be summarized as follows:

a) Allowable, if done infrequently. If a woman is known as being unable to behave herself within the limits of Sharee’ah at a gravesite, then she should be prevented from visiting the graves.

b) Disliked but not unlawful.

c) Forbidden.

14 - The Hajj journey is not meant to gain any material reward. It is a selfless sacrifice solely for Allah, Most Majestic. It demands true love and fear of Him. It should be performed with full consciousness of one's heart, with full humility and submission to Allah. It should not be thought of as a tourist-type excursion or be performed as mere physical rites. It develops sincerity, piety, humility, self-control, sacrifice, and true knowledge of the meaning of submission and obedience to Allah, Most High. It helps the pilgrim to be a better person who is devoted to Allah in every aspect of life.

contemplate on Hajar, the mother of Ismaa'eel

While in Sa'y, contemplate on Hajar, the mother of Ismaa'eel, when she asked her husband Ibraaheem: "Did Allah order you to do this (leaving her and her baby Ismaa'eel in Makkah)? He said: "Yes." Her great response was: "Then He (Allah) will not neglect us!" Think about this great dependence upon Allah when you are in the Sa'y, walking the same path that Hajar took in search of water and sustenance around the mounts of Safa and Marwah. Think about her endurance, perseverance and true belief in Allah. The Sa'y exemplifies the strong belief that we must have in the One Who Sustains and Provides - Allah the Exalted.

9 - The standing on 'Arafat is the Hajj. The crowds should remind you of the Day of Resurrection. Humble yourself to Allah, manifest your 'Ubudiyyah (worship) to Him Alone through supplications, sincere intention and strong determination to free yourself from the sins of the past and to build up a commitment to rush toward doing what is good. Think of becoming a better person when you return. Rid yourself of false pride and showing off because it may ruin what you may gain on this day.

10 - You gathered the pebbles and you are about to embark on stoning the Jamarat. This is an act of obedience and remembrance of Allah, Most Magnificent. The Prophet  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) said: "When you cast the small pebbles (i.e. at the Jamarat), it will be a light for you on the Day of Resurrection."

11 - When performing the sacrifice remember the saying of Allah, the Most High: {It is neither their meat nor their blood that reaches Allah, but it is your devotion that reaches him….} [Quran 22:37]

12 - When you have completed your Hajj, do not think that the remembrance of Allah has ended. Listen to what Allah Says (what means): {So when you have accomplished your Manasik (i.e. the rites of Hajj) remember Allah as you remember your forefathers or with a far more remembrance….} [Quran 2:200]

anguishes that made eyes weep

Al-Hasan Al-Basri, may Allah have mercy on him, said, warning and explaining the difference between having good expectations of Allah and being tempted and deluded by the worldly life: “There are people whose confidence in forgiveness diverts them from performing good deeds, , so much so that they die without having a single good deed. . They proclaim: ‘we have good expectation of Allah’. Surely, they are liars, for if they had good expectations [of Him], they would have done good [to support their claim].”

An Arab poet said (what means):

v  Contemplate life and you will notice things and marvel at how they went down

v  How many were the anguishes that made eyes weep, but when Allah, The Most Generous, alleviated them for us, they became easy to bear

v  And how many were the needs that seemed like a mirage, but when Allah willed it, they became attainable

v  How much bitterness have we tasted, but it faded away despite the harshness of life

v  This is the way of the world; if you adorn it with patience, it becomes adorned with prosperity

Oh Allah, bless us with having good expectations of You, showing genuine reliance on You, and relishing the sweetness of acknowledging our need of You.
